In celebration of National Deep Dish Pizza Day, we’re exploring the history of the beloved food, what makes it so unique, and where you can get your hands on a slice.

Diving into Deep Dish Pizza

Define Deep Dish

Think of a traditional pizza, but thicker. Its base is closer to a pie crust, and sturdy enough to hold up a mountain of toppings. The dough is often fortified with olive oil or butter, covered with tons of mozzarella, toppings, and a thick layer of tomato sauce and finally cooked in a cast iron pan

Roots in the Windy City

Deep dish pizza has its origins deeply rooted in the vibrant city of Chicago. Legend has it that the first deep dish pizza was created back in 1943 at Pizzeria Uno by Ike Sewell, although some argue that it was truly invented by the pizzeria’s subsequent owner, Ric Riccardo. The creation was completely unique, a departure from the traditional thin-crust pizza. It stood at about an inch tall — half the height of a deep dish pizza today. This new invention proved to be the perfect option for pizza lovers who wanted a heartier, more satisfying slice.

The Best Deep Dish Pizzas Around

Now, let’s talk about the important stuff – where to find the best deep dish pizza. A fan favorite is Lou Malnati’s. With locations all over the United States, they’ve perfected the art of the deep dish pizza, with a secret recipe that’s been passed down through generations. But don’t count out Giordano’s and Gino’s East. These spots also have some seriously delicious options, each with their own unique twist.

In celebration of National Deep Dish Pizza Day, there’s no better time to indulge in this Chicago classic. Whether you’re in the Windy City or at your local spot, grab a slice (or two) and dig in. And if you prefer to indulge at home, Oggi’s lineup of frozen pizzas offers an easy way to satisfy that pizza craving from the comfort of your kitchen.
